What do you do when you show up to a meeting looking like this?
You don't notice until it's too late...and you don't know how to fix it.
In my bewildered state, only two options came to mind:
1. Carry on with my new look.
2. Ask for time to resolve the issue.
Not wanting to delay the meeting, I decided on option 1. Thanks in large part to my peers who continued in a most professional manner (after we shared a good laugh of course).
Still, I just couldn't bare the sight of my image - nor could I understand how anyone could take me seriously. Arrrr!
So, I frantically worked away in the background trying to figure out what on earth was going on...and what I would do to my kids who were surely to blame for this gaffe! 😉
All this while trying to stay alert on the call. It wasn't easy.
In retrospect, I should have probably gone with options 3 or 4 which hadn't came to mind:
3. Ask for help.
4. Turn camera off.
Seems so obvious now - I KNOW. But the brain tends to shut off when panic sets in!
If you're faced with any sort of presentation hiccup, technical or otherwise, don't be a scallywag*. Attack it like a pro:
Especially if it's obvious, acknowledge the situation and maintain a sense of humour. (It can get really awkward if you don't.)
It's ok to have a laugh.
It's ok to take a moment out.
And it's perfectly ok to ask for help.
But just in case you do ever find yourself the victim of a Zoom video effect, here's how to fix it:
1. Click the arrow attached to the camera icon (bottom left).
2. Select Choose Video Filter.
3. Click "None".
4. Click Studio Effects (bottom right on same window).
5. Click "None" for all: Eyebrows, Moustache & Beard, Lip Colour
You'll be happy to know I did eventually fix my settings. I've since discovered so many fun effects, filters and even avatars. If you haven't already tried them, go on and have a play.
Just make sure to switch them all off before you disconnect!
*Scallywag = amateur. Also one of my favourite pirate words so I had to throw it in here.
