Jokes aside

I couldn’t agree more with the following quote from Herbert Gardner, a stand-up comedian sharing advice for public speakers:

“Once you get people laughing, they’re listening, and you can tell them almost anything.”

I always try to plan a little humour into my talks and workshops. I'm intentional about it because I know it wakes people up - and it changes the energy of the group.

Audiences appreciate funny things. Especially when they're unexpected - breaking the monotony of otherwise dull professional speak.

It’s not easy to make people laugh. But often, I’m just aiming for a chuckle or even a smile. You don’t need to do anything wildly hilarious or wacky.

Still, it can feel tricky to execute.

Can you relate to any of the following?

  • I’m not funny.

  • I need to be professional.

  • I’m speaking about a serious topic.

  • I don’t know what’s appropriate.

These are all valid concerns. And while you should consider them, don’t let them stop you.

Of course you need to be respectful. And as always, it's best to stay away from politics, religion, or otherwise divisive topics.

These days, there are so many safe and simple ways to incorporate humour into your talk. Sometimes all it takes is a funny picture, meme, or even a quote. You don’t need to BE funny, you can just BORROW from someone who is!

Remember, you don’t need to get people keeling over in laughter. Just try to put a smile on their face.

That is often enough to end their daydreaming and bring them back to you...so they actually hear you out.

After all, there's no point talking if no one's listening. Humour is a great way to make that happen.

As you can see from the meme below, sometimes you just gotta' do what it takes. ;)
