I’m not usually one for New Year’s resolutions. But this year, I decided to give it a shot. I even came up with a tagline—cheesy as it may sound (and trust me, I’ve been told it is):
Simplify...to enjoy!
The idea is simple: to pare things down so I can savour more. In my personal life, that means less fretting over perfection, less chasing imaginary expectations, and more finding ways to make things easier - so I can focus on what makes me truly happy.
So far, it’s going well. Over the break, I turned a jam-packed itinerary into a relaxed day we could actually enjoy. Last weekend, I hosted a dinner party with just one dessert instead of two. Revolutionary? Maybe not, but for me, these felt like wins. It’s all about those baby steps!
As a result, I’ve been taking more walks, doing some reading, and just chillin' on the couch a little more - it's been a nice change.
Simplicity isn’t just a personal mantra—it’s essential for presentations, too.
Why simplicity matters
Clarity wins: A distilled message helps your audience easily grasp your key points.
Engagement grows: Streamlined content focuses attention on what matters most, keeping your audience interested.
Memorability increases: A clear, focused message sticks.
How to simplify your presentations
Focus on the core message: Define one key takeaway and ensure every slide or section supports it. Cut what doesn’t.
Prioritise essential details: Your audience doesn’t need every statistic or anecdote—just the insights that count.
Edit ruthlessly: Trim sentences, bullet points, or examples that don’t add value.
Simplicity doesn’t mean dumbing down your content. It's about cutting through the noise to reveal the core of your message—like crafting a playlist with only the greatest hits.
It can feel counterintuitive at first, but trust me, it’s worth it. Your audience will thank you, and you’ll be far more likely to achieve the results you’re after.
Here’s to making things simpler—and better—in 2025!
